Cates nets two goals as Flyers come from behind to defeat Panthers 4-3

PHILADELPHIA — In an exciting matchup on Monday night, the Philadelphia Flyers triumphed over the Florida Panthers with a score of 4-3, managing to rally from behind on two occasions.

Noah Cates was a standout player for the Flyers, scoring two crucial goals in the third period. Garnet Hathaway and Morgan Frost also contributed by finding the back of the net for Philadelphia, which marked their first instance this season of scoring multiple power-play goals in consecutive games. Sam Ersson, in goal for the Flyers, made 20 saves to help the team secure their second consecutive victory.
For the Panthers, Sam Reinhart netted two goals, while Uvis Balinskis added another to the scoreline. This result meant that Florida has now lost six of its last nine games. In goal, Sergei Bobrovsky recorded 25 saves but couldn’t hold off the Philadelphia offense.

Cates’ performance was significant, as he scored his first goal on a power play and then followed it up with a breakaway goal, marking his second career game with multiple goals, the first occurring during his rookie season in April 2022. Philadelphia found themselves initially trailing 2-0 but managed to equalize the score, only to give up the lead again. Ultimately, they scored twice in the later stages of the third period to take control of the game for good.

Looking at individual stats, Reinhart’s two goals represented his fifth multigoal game of the current season; notably, this was only the second time in his 11-year career that he scored in back-to-back games. Just last Saturday, he scored two goals during Florida’s overtime loss against Boston. On the other hand, Cates, who plays center for the Flyers’ third line, has been on fire lately, amassing eight goals and six assists over the last 15 games.

A pivotal moment in the game occurred when the Flyers, despite struggling with their power play at the bottom of the NHL rankings, executed a series of precise passes from Jaime Drysdale and Matvei Michkov, leading to Frost’s equalizing goal at 3-3. This came after the Flyers had just overcome one deficit, only to fall behind once again.

A key statistical highlight from the game is that the Flyers have demonstrated their resilience this season by coming back from behind to earn points after trailing after two periods on seven occasions, having won six of those games. This performance ties them with Vegas for the most such wins in the NHL.

Looking ahead, the Panthers are set to compete against New Jersey on Tuesday, while the Flyers will be visiting Columbus.
