MANCHESTER, England — Manchester City’s captain, Kyle Walker, is interested in the possibility of leaving the club, as revealed by manager Pep Guardiola on Saturday. Walker, who has achieved great success with City, including six league titles and a Champions League victory, did not participate in the recent 8-0 victory over Salford City in the FA Cup.

Guardiola confirmed that Walker expressed his desire to consider options for playing abroad as he nears the end of his playing career. “Two days ago, Kyle asked to explore the options to play abroad at the end of his career,” Guardiola stated. He acknowledged Walker’s significant contribution as a right-back, indicating that his performances have filled a vital role for the team. However, Guardiola noted that Walker is now inclined to pursue opportunities outside the Premier League.

At 34, Walker has faced some challenges this season, contributing to City’s struggles, which see them trailing league leaders Liverpool by 12 points, having recorded just one win in their last 13 matches. Since transferring from Tottenham in 2017, Walker has been a part of 15 major trophy wins, solidifying his reputation as one of the Premier League’s preeminent right-backs.

Guardiola also mentioned that Walker had shown a desire to leave the club two years ago, and this sentiment has resurfaced. “He said that ‘I want to explore, my mind and my heart,’” Guardiola recounted.

With the January transfer window now open and set to close on February 3, the potential for a move could unfold soon.
