DALLAS — Chuck Harris delivered a standout performance, scoring 21 points, while B.J. Edwards added 19 points to lead Southern Methodist University (SMU) to a commanding 93-71 victory over Georgia Tech, effectively snapping a two-game losing streak on Saturday.
Supporting the team’s efforts, Yohan Traore and Kario Oquendo contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively, with Matt Cross adding another 11 points for SMU, who now hold a record of 12-4 and 3-2 in conference play. Notably, reserves Javian McCollum and Duncan Powell also made significant contributions, scoring 20 and 13 points respectively.
For the Yellow Jackets, Naithan George managed to score 11 points while providing 10 assists, and Lance Terry chipped in 10 points as well. Despite their efforts, the closest Georgia Tech got to SMU after the halftime break was the final score.
The game started with SMU quickly taking control, jumping out to a 13-4 lead within the first five minutes. By the midpoint of the first half, they had extended their advantage to 32-13, and by the 15-minute mark, the score had soared to 43-15. At halftime, SMU had established a substantial lead of 50-19, showcasing an impressive shooting percentage of 56% (19 for 34). Of their 19 baskets, 11 came either from dunks or layups, highlighting their dominant inside game.
Georgia Tech struggled in the first half, committing 14 turnovers, which SMU capitalized on to score 21 points. Although the Yellow Jackets entered the match with a recent strong run, having won three of their last four games, this defeat leaves them with an 8-9 record overall and 2-4 in conference play. The victory marked a notable moment, as it was the first match-up between the two institutions since December 21, 1986, when Georgia Tech previously triumphed 63-54, giving them a historical series edge of 8-7 over SMU.
