Ex-Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz passes away at 37, cause of death undisclosed

BALTIMORE — Brian Matusz, a left-handed pitcher known for his significant contributions to Major League Baseball, particularly with the Baltimore Orioles, has passed away at the age of 37. His death was confirmed late Tuesday by both the Baltimore Orioles organization and the University of San Diego, where he played college baseball. The family of Matusz informed the university, but the cause of death has not been disclosed; it reportedly occurred in Arizona.

On Wednesday evening, the Phoenix Police Department revealed that they received a call regarding an unresponsive person at 2:45 p.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, officers found Matusz’s body and indicated that the case is now under investigation, pending the results from the medical examiner.

The Baltimore Orioles expressed their sorrow over Matusz’s passing, stating, “Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole Brian Matusz.” A key member of the Orioles from 2009 to 2016, Matusz was appreciated for his infectious enthusiasm for baseball and engagement with the fan base. He was not only a valued teammate but also someone who consistently brought joy to those around him.

Matusz was selected fourth overall in the 2008 MLB Draft by the Orioles following his standout collegiate career at the University of San Diego. San Diego’s baseball coach, Brock Ungricht, reflected on Matusz’s impact, noting, “Brian was one of the best players to ever wear a Torero uniform.” He emphasized Matusz’s commitment to the USD community and his passion for baseball, recognizing that his unexpected departure has left a significant gap that will be felt by many. Matusz’s legacy, however, will continue to motivate those inspired by his character both on and off the field.

He made his major league debut in 2009 and started as a pitcher until transitioning to a relief role in 2012. That year, the Orioles secured a wild card spot, marking their first appearance in the postseason in 15 years. In 2014, Matusz recorded a 2-3 record with a 3.48 ERA across 63 relief outings while contributing to the Orioles’ victory in the AL East.

In 2016, Matusz was traded to the Atlanta Braves early in the season and eventually joined the Chicago Cubs, with his last major league appearance being a singular start for them that year.
