BANGKOK — On Saturday, Thai authorities confirmed the arrest of two individuals in connection with a bombing incident in northern Thailand that resulted in at least three fatalities and left many others injured. The tragedy occurred during an outdoor event at a festival in Umphang, a town in Tak province near the border with Myanmar, shortly before midnight on Friday, as reported by the Association of the Umphang Rescue Groups.

According to local police reports, the bombing injured at least 48 individuals, and no charges have been filed against the suspects as investigations are currently underway. Defense Ministry spokesperson Thanathip Sawangsang noted that local police indicated a confrontation between rival factions preceded the explosion, emphasizing that there is no indication of a broader security threat in the area.

Forensic examinations revealed that the explosive involved was a homemade device, raising concerns about the underlying tensions in the region. Tak province has a significant military presence, particularly in its border districts, including Umphang itself.

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her sympathies to the victims and their families. A government spokesperson, Jirayu Houngsap, stated that she has directed security forces and relevant agencies to assist in the investigation and provide support to those impacted by the attack.
