ATLANTA — The availability of quarterback Carson Beck for No. 2 Georgia’s upcoming Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal is currently in question after he sustained an elbow injury during the Southeastern Conference championship game against Texas on Saturday.
On Monday, Georgia revealed that there is no set timeline for Beck’s recovery as he and his family are exploring various treatment alternatives.
Coach Kirby Smart mentioned on Sunday that the team is waiting for the results from the medical tests. However, in the announcement made on Monday, the school did not provide specific details about the nature of Beck’s injury.
Beck’s injury occurred on the last play of the first half in the Bulldogs’ narrow 22-19 overtime victory over Texas. Although he was hurt, he dramatically returned to the field for the handoff during the decisive game-winning moment. This was necessary after backup quarterback Gunner Stockton was temporarily sidelined due to losing his helmet.
The injury impacted Beck’s right throwing arm. Despite his struggles, he managed to take the snap and executed a handoff to Trevor Etienne, whose 4-yard touchdown run secured the victory. However, Beck was unable to lift his right arm afterward.
Smart reported that Beck was present for the team meeting during the College Football Playoff selection announcement, although his mood was understandably somber. “It was a tough deal for him in terms of not being able to go out there and finish in the second half,” Smart reflected.
Additionally, Georgia announced that punter Brett Thorson will require season-ending surgery due to an injury to his non-kicking leg sustained during the game against Texas.
In a statement from the school, Smart praised both Beck and Thorson, describing them as fierce competitors and diligent workers. “I’m confident they will attack their rehab with the same determination they exhibit in their daily habits. We will be here to support them every step of the way,” he stated.
If Beck is unable to play in the Sugar Bowl set for January 1, Stockton is the most likely candidate to step into the starting role. Stockton performed well against Texas, completing 12 of his 16 passes for a total of 71 yards, albeit with one interception.
