NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In an impressive display at the Music City Classic, No. 14 Kentucky continued its unbeaten streak by overcoming Arizona State with a final score of 77-61. Clara Strack led the Wildcats with a standout performance, recording 24 points and securing 10 rebounds, while Teonni Key contributed significantly with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
The Wildcats nearly achieved a rare feat with four players nearing double-doubles: Georgia Amoore added 20 points along with nine rebounds, and Amelia Hassett finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Kentucky showcased strong shooting with a 42% field goal rate and capitalized on Arizona State’s mistakes by scoring 13 points off 14 turnovers.
For the Sun Devils (3-3), Jalyn Brown was the leading scorer with 16 points, while Nevaeh Parkinson supported the effort with 12 points and nine rebounds. However, the team struggled offensively, shooting only 30% from the field.
Arizona State managed to cut a significant 19-point deficit down to 11 by the end of the third quarter. Yet, Kentucky swiftly responded with a pivotal 6-0 run, featuring baskets from Key, Amoore, and Strack, extending the lead back to 15 points midway through the final period.
The Wildcats took control early in the game, leading 42-23 at halftime, notably dominating the second quarter with a remarkable 27-9 scoring differential. Kentucky erupted with the opening 13 points of the period, with Strack scoring the last seven. After a couple of free throws from ASU, Kentucky continued to press, going on an 11-2 run capped by a three-pointer from Hassett, pushing their advantage to 20 points. Strack and Key each had significant contributions in the first half, scoring 14 and 10 points respectively.
Looking ahead, both teams remain in the Music City Classic with Kentucky set to face No. 19 Illinois and Arizona State going up against South Dakota on Wednesday.
