ST. GEORGE, Utah — In an exciting matchup, Davin Wydner led West Georgia to a thrilling 34-31 victory over Utah Tech, marking the team’s first win in the United Athletic Conference this season. Wydner showcased his skill by throwing two touchdown passes and adding a rushing score on Saturday.
The Wolves, now standing at 4-7 overall and 1-7 in the conference, found themselves in a tough spot early in the game, trailing 14-0. However, Wydner got them on the board late in the first quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run. He then linked up with T.J. Lockley for a significant 38-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter. Later, Wydner’s connection with Chase Belcher resulted in a 32-yard touchdown that allowed West Georgia to tie the game at 24 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Chance Gagnon provided West Georgia with a crucial lead by converting a 44-yard field goal. Shortly after, Solomanie Bambara made a pivotal play by intercepting a pass from Reggie Graff and returning it 50 yards for a touchdown, extending the Wolves’ lead to 34-24 with just over 11 minutes left on the clock. Although Utah Tech responded with a 9-yard touchdown run from Shamar Garrett to close the gap to three points with 6:47 remaining, West Georgia managed to maintain their lead.
Wydner had an impressive performance, completing 15 of 19 passes for a total of 197 yards, along with 45 rushing yards on 12 attempts. On the other hand, Utah Tech’s Graff finished the game with 272 passing yards, completing 22 out of 37 attempts but was troubled by two interceptions. Graff helped the Trailblazers take a 24-14 lead at halftime with touchdown passes of 12 yards to Bryce Parker and 2 yards to Chris Street.
This victory represents a significant achievement for West Georgia as they strive to improve their season record amidst a challenging conference schedule.
