INDIANAPOLIS — Renowned gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi, widely recognized for coaching numerous Olympic gold medalists and world champions, has passed away at the age of 82.

Karolyi’s impact on the sport of gymnastics is profound, having shaped the careers of many athletes, including the celebrated ‘Magnificent Seven,’ who won gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Born in Romania, Karolyi moved to the United States in the 1980s and quickly established himself as a prominent figure in American gymnastics.

His coaching techniques were often discussed and, at times, controversial, but it is undeniable that under his guidance, many gymnasts reached extraordinary heights in their careers.

Karolyi’s legacy extends beyond his athletes’ accomplishments; he played a pivotal role in developing the gymnastics program in the U.S., which saw tremendous growth in participation and success over the years.
