MADRID — On Sunday, tens of thousands gathered in Madrid to protest against Spain’s socialist Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez. The demonstration, orchestrated by the opposition Popular Party, called for Sánchez’s resignation and demanded the initiation of new elections.

The rally was held under the provocative slogan ‘Mafia or democracy,’ reflecting mounting frustration over perceived corruption scandals linked with Sánchez’s political associates and family members. The protest was a manifestation of growing discontent within the opposition regarding ethical concerns surrounding the prime minister’s leadership.

Currently, Sánchez finds himself embroiled in a series of legal investigations. These ongoing cases have notably zeroed in on a former minister from his Cabinet, as well as bringing scrutiny upon his wife and, most recently, his brother. None of these investigations have thus far concluded, but they have nonetheless added pressure to Sánchez’s administration.

The Popular Party’s push for accountability and transparency is at the core of its campaign to challenge the existing government. This mass mobilization represents a significant step for the opposition in amplifying their criticisms and rallying public support for political change.
