A tragic incident overshadowed the Nations League final between Spain and Portugal on Sunday, as a soccer fan lost his life after a fatal fall at the stadium in Munich. The accident took place during the first period of extra time, increasing the tension already felt by both players and supporters.

According to Munich police spokesman Tobias Schenk, the man plummeted from an upper tier, landing on a staircase close to where members of the press were seated. “Tragically, he died at the scene,” Schenk reported on Monday.

In response to the incident, the Munich police initiated a thorough investigation. “As is the protocol in such situations, the criminal police are handling the case. They are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing video footage. Presently, it appears to have been an unfortunate accident,” Schenk continued.

Spectators who witnessed the fall immediately called for assistance. Emergency medical staff, alongside stewards and police personnel, quickly secured the area. Efforts were made by the medics to resuscitate the man, while a tarpaulin was used to shield the scene from the public’s view.

Details about the victim have been limited, with police only revealing that he hailed from the Garmisch-Partenkirchen region. Despite the tragedy, the match proceeded, with Portugal ultimately claiming victory in a penalty shootout.

Both teams’ coaches took a moment during their post-match conferences to address the incident. Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, expressed his sorrow, saying, “Before we address any questions, I want to extend my deepest condolences following the loss of a fan today. My thoughts are with his family.” Similarly, Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martínez, commented, “We mourn the fan who tragically passed away. This is deeply saddening news.”
