Milroe and Williams propel No. 9 Alabama to a dominant 52-7 victory against FCS opponent Mercer

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Jalen Milroe showcased a stellar performance, throwing for two touchdowns and rushing for another as the ninth-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide triumphed over FCS opponent Mercer with a commanding score of 52-7 on Saturday.

Ryan Williams also made significant contributions to the Crimson Tide (8-2, No. 9 CFP) with a 29-yard rushing touchdown and a 14-yard touchdown reception. After a triumphant victory over LSU last week, Alabama grabbed a break from SEC matchups, focusing on refining their playoff prospects and aiming for the Southeastern Conference title.

On the other hand, the Bears (9-2), who were missing their starting quarterback DJ Smith due to injury, had already secured a spot in the FCS playoffs along with at least a share of the Southern Conference title. Whitt Newbauer, who filled in as quarterback for Mercer, completed 15 of his 22 passes for 140 yards and had one interception. The Bears managed to avoid being shut out after Newbauer connected with Kendall Harris for a 31-yard touchdown pass right before halftime.

The game proceeded as anticipated, with Alabama establishing a strong lead of 31-7 by halftime. Milroe finished his day by scoring on a 3-yard run during the opening drive of the second half, marking his 17th touchdown of the season before he was substituted out. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 186 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown throw to tight end Robbie Ouzts, and rushed the ball six times, accumulating 43 yards. After a recent four-touchdown game against LSU, Milroe exited the game early, allowing backup Ty Simpson to take over.

In terms of analysis, Mercer struggled with their early-game opportunities, as three drives into Alabama’s territory resulted in turnovers, including two fumbles. The Bears still have a chance to claim the Southern Conference title outright if they defeat Furman. For Alabama, the team efficiently managed the game as expected and allowed backups, including Simpson and two other quarterbacks, to gain experience. Simpson went 5-for-10 passing for 71 yards in the second half.

Looking ahead, Mercer is set to host Furman next Saturday, while Alabama will travel to face Oklahoma on the same day.
