COLUMBIA, S.C. — The baseball program at the University of South Carolina will soon play at “Ray Tanner Field,” a tribute to the two-time College World Series champion coach and retiring athletic director.

The announcement was made on Friday, revealing that the renaming will take effect starting in the 2025 season. The stadium will maintain its current official name, Founders Park, as Founders Federal Credit Union recently extended its contract for naming rights until 2035.

A collective of donors for Gamecocks athletics came together to raise $2.5 million in order to honor Tanner by naming the field after him. Tanner, who had previously announced his departure from the role of athletic director after 12 years, will remain until a new director is appointed.

Tanner served as South Carolina’s baseball coach from 1997 to 2012, guiding the team to six College World Series appearances, with victories in 2010 and 2011. The Gamecocks finished as the national runner-up in 2012, and shortly after, Tanner transitioned into his role as the athletic director.

In a statement, Tanner expressed his gratitude for the recognition, saying, “This is a tremendous gesture from my friends and donors. I am grateful for their commitment to this project.”

Last June, Tanner appointed Paul Manieri, a former national championship coach from LSU, to succeed Mark Kingston, who was let go after seven years with the team.

A ceremony to mark the dedication of Ray Tanner Field is set to occur at the beginning of the South Carolina baseball season in February.
