SAN FRANCISCO — In a thrilling contest, Otto Lopez secured the decisive RBI single during a remarkable four-run 10th inning as the Miami Marlins triumphed over the San Francisco Giants 8-5 on Wednesday night. This victory signifies Miami’s first back-to-back series wins for this season.
Facing Camilo Doval (3-2), Lopez delivered a crucial hit, driving in the go-ahead run for a 5-4 Miami lead. Heriberto Hernández then added to the scoreboard with a two-run double to left-center, moving to third base on the throw home. Connor Norby concluded the inning with a sacrifice fly, solidifying Miami’s third consecutive victory.
Miami closer Calvin Faucher (3-2) entered the game with a 4-2 advantage in the ninth. Challenges arose as two batters were hit and a walk loaded the bases. Willy Adames capitalized with a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-3. Patrick Bailey followed with a crucial single, allowing Casey Schmitt to score the tying run. However, a strong throw from Kyle Stowers to Nick Fortes caught Jung Hoo Lee at home plate, maintaining the 4-4 tie.
Starting the game with flair, Mike Yastrzemski of the Giants hit a leadoff home run that clipped the right-field foul pole. The homer marked his seventh of the season and was among three hits given up by Edward Cabrera over 5 1/3 innings on the mound.
In the fourth inning, Lopez contributed a pivotal two-run double, which were the only runs allowed by Logan Webb in his six-inning start. Webb showed consistency, surrendering six hits and three walks while striking out six.
A key defensive play occurred when third baseman Norby adeptly caught a sharp line drive by Christian Koss in the ninth with Bailey on second and two outs, pushing the game into extra innings.
Despite numerous opportunities, the Giants struggled with runners in scoring position, hitting just 2 for 9 in such situations during the game. Moreover, their recent struggles are highlighted by an 8 for 59 performance (.136) in their last eight games in these scenarios.
Looking ahead, Miami’s Janson Junk (2-0, 2.60 ERA) is set to face San Francisco’s Hayden Birdsong (3-1, 3.25 ERA) in the upcoming game on Thursday.
