Turkey launches investigation into the death of Turkish-American activist in the West Bank amid Israel-Hamas conflict

Turkey has begun its own investigation into the death of a Turkish-American activist who was shot and killed by Israeli forces during a protest against settlements in the occupied West Bank. The incident occurred last week, and the Turkish Justice Minister announced on Thursday that Turkey is looking into the matter. The 26-year-old activist, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, from Seattle, was participating in a demonstration against settlements in the Palestinian territory when she was fatally shot. Israel has stated that she was likely shot unintentionally by soldiers. The Ankara chief prosecutor’s office is leading the Turkish probe, and the Justice Minister has called on U.N. agencies to investigate as well. Turkey plans to present its findings to a U.N. court overseeing a genocide case against Israel filed by South Africa concerning the Gaza war.

Furthermore, in southern Syria, a car was struck by an Israeli airstrike, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, as reported by a Syrian pro-government media outlet and an opposition war monitor. The strike took place on Thursday morning in the village of Khan Arnabeh near Syria’s Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the casualties but did not provide additional information. Israel has conducted similar airstrikes in the area over recent months, targeting Iran-linked militants according to Israeli authorities. Israel’s objective is to prevent Iranian entrenchment in Syria, where many Iran-backed fighters are stationed, utilizing Syria as a crucial path to supply weapons to Lebanon’s Hezbollah group.
