As the world of travel continues to evolve, new destinations and experiences emerge, inviting travelers to explore beyond the well-trodden paths. From the historic charm of Ålborg, Denmark, to the vibrant cultural resurgence of Cartagena, Colombia, and the luxurious allure of the Eastern & Oriental Express, unique and captivating locales await discovery. This article delves into five distinct destinations that promise enriching adventures, highlighting their unique attractions and upcoming developments. We aim for this list to spark your interest in exploring the world differently in the upcoming year. As Travel and Leisure suggests, we look forward to crossing paths with you on your adventures.

Ålborg, Denmark

Despite being Denmark’s fourth-largest city with a population of approximately 120,000, Ålborg may not be the first choice for international travelers. However, Scandinavian Airlines is working to change that by offering new flights from Newark Liberty International, running three times a week from April to October. Ålborg’s historic old town is a picturesque area with narrow cobblestone streets bordered by charming half-timbered and pastel-colored buildings. The city’s waterfront, now home to the renovated Pier 5 Hotel, is another delightful spot to explore. Cultural attractions in Ålborg include a modern art museum, an architecture center, and the recently opened Regan Vest, a Cold War museum housed in a former bunker. Additionally, Ålborg is a convenient starting point for discovering North Jutland, with attractions like the striking coastline of Skagen, the dunes of Thy National Park, and ancient Viking ring fortresses that have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena, a popular destination for travelers, is transforming into a luxury hotspot, especially along its Caribbean coast. In 2023, Casa Pestagua, a boutique hotel set in a restored 17th-century building, opened its doors in the city. The same property owners have plans to introduce bungalows on Isla Barú by the end of the year. For eco-conscious travelers, Blue Apple Beach, an eco-friendly hotel on Tierra Bomba Island, is B Corp certified and utilizes solar power. Additionally, a Colombia tour inspired by Disney’s ‘Encanto’ will debut in 2024, with Cartagena as a highlighted stop. Delta Air Lines will be launching direct flights from Atlanta to Cartagena in December 2023, and a new Four Seasons hotel is in the works. The country is also investing in expanding its airport to accommodate the growing number of tourists.

Eastern & Oriental Express, a Belmond Train

Following a four-year break, the luxurious Eastern & Oriental Express will be back in service in February, offering travelers a lavish train experience. With 15 cabins adorned in cherry wood and vibrant Malay-inspired decorations, the train will introduce several new travel itineraries. One such journey, the Essence of Malaysia, will take passengers from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, with stops in Langkawi and Penang. The Wild Malaysia itinerary includes a visit to Taman Negara National Park, known for its wildlife like Sumatran rhinos and tigers. This extravagant train features amenities such as a piano bar car, an open-air lounge, and two restaurant carriages serving Peranakan cuisine.

Germany

Germany will be hosting the UEFA European Football Championship from June to July 2024, bringing soccer excitement to 10 cities including Berlin, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich. This highly anticipated sports event, only second to the World Cup, is expected to attract a large audience. Munich, a significant host city, recently welcomed the opening of the new Rosewood Munich hotel. Positioned in a former State Bank of Bavaria building and a Baroque residence, the hotel provides 132 rooms and is conveniently located near Old Town and the popular surfing spots along the Isar River.

Experience Métis Culture in Alberta at Métis Crossing

Located in Alberta, Métis Crossing offers a fully immersive experience of Métis culture spanning across 688 acres. Visitors have the option to stay at a 40-room lodge or campgrounds and engage in a variety of seasonal activities such as traditional crafts, festivals, bird-watching, canoeing, and snowshoeing. A recent addition to Métis Crossing is the introduction of eight Sky Watching Domes, which are luxurious suites featuring panoramic skylight windows perfect for stargazing and witnessing the aurora borealis. This extraordinary destination allows visitors to forge a deep connection with the land, water, skies, and rich cultural heritage of the Métis people.
