DETROIT — In an exciting matchup on Saturday, Marco Rossi netted the game-winner with just 1:25 left in overtime, leading the Minnesota Wild to a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory against the Detroit Red Wings.
Rossi had just finished serving a penalty for hooking when he seized the opportunity for a breakaway, ultimately slipping the puck past the goal line. Matt Boldy contributed significantly to Minnesota’s triumph, adding a goal and an assist, as the team overcame a 3-1 deficit in the third period. Additional goals came from Marcus Foligno and Vinnie Hinostroza, while veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury made 27 saves to secure the win.
On the other side, the Red Wings had a strong showing, with Dylan Larkin, Alex DeBrincat, and Lucas Raymond each recording a goal and an assist. Larkin’s goal marked his 13th power-play score of the season, placing him in a tie with Tampa Bay’s Jake Guentzel and Brayden Point for the highest in the league.
Notably, Andrew Copp celebrated a milestone, reaching his 300th career point during his 700th game with a first-period assist. Cam Talbot was busy in the net for Detroit, finishing the night with 35 saves.
Key insights from the game reveal that the Wild have been resilient even without their top scorer Kirill Kaprizov, who has been sidelined for seven games due to a lower-body injury but is expected to remain on long-term injured reserve. During this stretch, Minnesota has posted a record of 5-2.
For the Red Wings, however, they faced a setback as Copp did not finish the game after getting injured in a scuffle during the latter part of the second period.
One pivotal moment in the game occurred when Minnesota pulled Fleury for an extra skater while trailing 3-2. Foligno managed to score the equalizer, capitalizing on a pass from Rossi with a deft shot from the left side.
Another key statistic highlighted Fleury’s achievement, as the 40-year-old made his 1,045th career appearance, surpassing Roberto Luongo to claim second place on the NHL’s all-time list for goaltender appearances. Martin Brodeur still holds the top position with 1,266 games played. Fleury has announced plans to retire at the end of the current season.
Looking ahead, the Wild will face the Red Wings again in a rematch set for Tuesday night.
