BRIGHTON, England — Veteran midfielder James Milner is on the brink of breaking the all-time appearance record in the Premier League. The 39-year-old is just 15 matches away from surpassing Gareth Barry’s impressive 653 appearances, a milestone he now edges closer to after renewing his contract with Brighton for another year.
Milner was hampered by a significant knee injury last season, restricting him to a mere four league games. However, he made his 638th appearance memorable by coming off the bench during a triumphant 4-1 match against Tottenham on the season’s finale.
Brighton manager, Fabian Hurzeler, emphasized Milner’s critical role within the team, not just on the pitch. “Although last season limited his playing time, his vast experience is crucial for the team, particularly aiding our younger players,” Hurzeler acknowledged. “Having him in our team environment is fantastic, and I cherish the chance to collaborate with him again.”
Milner, who will celebrate his 40th birthday in January, initiated his professional journey at 16 with Leeds in November 2002. Over his extensive career, which marks a 24-season run, he is stepping into his third season with Brighton after previously contributing eight years to Liverpool. His career has also seen him play for Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Newcastle.
Between 2009 and 2016, Milner represented England on the international stage 61 times, further showcasing his extensive contribution to the sport.
