CORAL GABLES, Fla. — In a strong performance, both Kara Dunn and Zoesha Smith contributed 16 points each to guide No. 20 Georgia Tech to a 77-66 win against Miami on Sunday.
Dunn, who recently reached the milestone of over 1,000 career points, showed impressive shooting skills, converting 7 of 13 attempts, including two from beyond the arc. Smith also had a noteworthy outing, hitting 8 of 12 shots for the Yellow Jackets, who improved their record to 18-4 overall and 6-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Chazadi Wright added to the team’s success with three 3-pointers and a total of 13 points. Tonie Morgan played a vital role, recording 12 points, along with six assists and five rebounds. Dani Carnegie made significant contributions at the foul line, sinking 7 of 8 free throws and finishing the game with 11 points.
For the Hurricanes, Haley Cavinder was the standout performer, scoring 25 points on an 11-for-21 shooting display. Miami, now at 13-9 with a 3-8 record in the conference, had enjoyed a brief win streak, claiming two victories after a challenging seven-game losing stretch. Cameron Williams produced an impressive performance as well with 12 points and a career-high of 16 rebounds, marking her sixth double-double this season. Darrione Rogers also added 11 points for Miami.
Morgan helped Georgia Tech establish a narrow 33-30 lead by halftime, scoring 10 points before the break. Meanwhile, Rogers and Cavinder kept Miami competitive, contributing 11 and 10 points, respectively.
In an explosive third quarter, Wright hit consecutive 3-pointers, followed by Smith’s two quick layup baskets. This fueled a 10-0 run, allowing Georgia Tech to expand their lead to 47-34 just four minutes into the period. Cavinder managed to score 11 of the Hurricanes’ 21 points during this quarter, and Natalija Marshall closed the period with a timely tip-in that brought Miami closer at 57-51.
As the game progressed, Cavinder managed to pull Miami within 63-59 after hitting a jumper. However, Dunn and Carnegie quickly responded with back-to-back scores, allowing Georgia Tech to secure a comfortable three-possession lead with 4:35 left on the clock. After that point, the Hurricanes were unable to reduce the deficit to less than five points.
Looking ahead, Georgia Tech is set to host SMU on Thursday, while Miami will advance to face No. 10 Duke on Sunday.
