Bears conduct interview with ex-Stanford coach David Shaw for head coach position

The Chicago Bears recently conducted an interview with David Shaw, the former Stanford University football coach, regarding their head coach position on Tuesday.

At 52 years old, Shaw boasts an impressive record of 96 wins and 54 losses over his tenure at Stanford from 2011 to 2022, during which he secured three Pac-12 Championships. Before his head coaching role at Stanford, Shaw gained experience as an assistant coach for teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, and Baltimore Ravens. In June, the Denver Broncos brought him on board to assess both college and professional players’ talents while aiding general manager George Paton with roster evaluations.

The Bears are in search of a new head coach to succeed Matt Eberflus, who was dismissed on November 29. The team concluded their season in last place in the NFC North with a record of 5-12, enduring a disheartening stretch of 10 consecutive losses before salvaging their season with a final victory against the Green Bay Packers.

A significant focus for the incoming coach will be the development of quarterback Caleb Williams, especially as the Bears strive to overcome their fourth consecutive season of losing records. Williams, who was selected as the first overall pick in last year’s draft, threw for 3,541 yards, alongside 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. However, he faced considerable setbacks as he was sacked a staggering 68 times, breaking franchise records while leading the league in this unfortunate statistic.

Shaw marks the tenth confirmed interviewee for the head coaching position with the Bears.

The list of candidates includes interim head coach Thomas Brown, former Carolina Panthers and Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Other notable candidates are former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, and Mike Vrabel, the former Tennessee Titans coach who was recently hired by New England.

Additionally, it is anticipated that the Bears will be interviewing Mike McCarthy, who has previously served as the head coach for the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. McCarthy was not retained after a disappointing 7-10 season in Dallas, following the conclusion of his contract.
