SEMBALUN, Indonesia — The body of a Brazilian hiker was recovered by Indonesian rescuers on Wednesday after she tragically fell from a ridge on a volcano, as stated by local officials.
Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old adventurer, suffered the fatal fall on Mount Rinjani, a well-known peak on Lombok Island. The recovery of her body was a grueling process, lasting more than five hours amid challenging weather conditions and the rugged, steep landscape.
“The stretch of terrain, along with the fog, made the operation lengthy,” explained Mohammad Syafii, the head of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency.
Authorities had confirmed Marins’ death the previous day, following an examination by rescuers once they reached her location. Marins was located with the help of a thermal drone after days of an exhaustive search, hampered by difficult terrain and inclement weather.
The incident gathered substantial attention back in Brazil, with many following the tense rescue developments closely. Indonesian officials and rescue teams held discussions with Marins’ family to walk them through the recovery operations and circumstances involved.
“The family showed an impressive level of understanding of the situation and the challenges faced,” noted Syafii.
Standing as Indonesia’s second-highest mountain, Mount Rinjani attracts countless trekking enthusiasts every year.
