TORONTO — Logan Stankoven played a pivotal role for the Dallas Stars, scoring two goals and providing an assist in their 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night.

Matt Duchene also contributed significantly with a goal and two assists, while Mavrik Bourque added another goal for the Stars, who redeemed themselves after their seven-game winning streak was broken in a recent match against Ottawa on Sunday. Jake Oettinger was solid in goal, making 27 saves throughout the game.

Auston Matthews scored the lone goal for Toronto, with Joseph Woll stopping 19 shots in net.

This loss marked the Maple Leafs’ third consecutive defeat in regulation, the first time this season they have stumbled in such a manner. Their recent losses include a 6-3 setback against Carolina on Thursday, followed by a 3-0 loss to Vancouver on Saturday.

Matthews managed to extend his personal point streak against the Stars to 12 games, a record that has been ongoing since February 7, 2017, marking the longest span he has had against any team. He was the one to open the scoring, although Stankoven quickly evened things with a goal shortly after.

Bourque then enabled Dallas to take the lead during a power play in the second period. Despite struggling on the power play throughout the season, the Stars, ranked 28th in the NHL in power plays, found success once again early in the third period when Duchene scored from close proximity.

Stankoven capped the game with yet another goal, leading the Stars to an impressive 9-1-1 record in their last eleven matchups.

Takeaways from the game show that Toronto’s power play, ranked 18th in the league, has struggled, managing only 2 for 14 in their last six games.

For the Stars, Stankoven netted his fifth and sixth goals of the season, a welcome return after a goal drought that lasted 25 games, as this marked the first time he scored since November 14.

The game’s turning point came when Bourque scored on a power play, marking Dallas’s first lead of the night, with Stankoven’s redirect playing a critical role in the goal.

A notable statistic from the match is that Toronto’s seven-game winning streak against the Stars, the longest active victory stretch they had against any opponent, came to an end.

Looking ahead, the Dallas Stars will host the Montreal Canadiens this Thursday, while the Toronto Maple Leafs will wrap up their three-game homestand against the New Jersey Devils, led by their former coach Sheldon Keefe.
