NEW YORK — Renowned filmmaker Martin Scorsese is set to produce a documentary that will spotlight Pope Francis’s contributions to cinema through an educational initiative he established prior to his passing.

The documentary, titled “Aldeas — A New Story,” will include conversations between Scorsese and Pope Francis, featuring what is described as the Pope’s last in-depth filmed interview. The film will explore the endeavors of Scholas Occurrentes, a global non-profit organization founded by Pope Francis in 2013 aimed at fostering dialogue and connection among youth.

Scholas Occurrentes has engaged young individuals in filmmaking through the Aldeas initiative, and the documentary will showcase budding filmmakers in Indonesia, Italy, and the Gambia creating short films. Announced by Aldeas Scholas Film and Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions, the film will emphasize the notion that creativity is a powerful tool for expression and transformation.

Prior to his death, Pope Francis described Aldeas as a “poetic and very constructive project,” reflecting the essence of the human experience, social interactions, and life’s fundamental journey.

While a release date for the documentary has not been disclosed, Scorsese emphasized the significance of cultural exchange and understanding, stating, “Now, more than ever, we need to talk to each other, listen to one another cross-culturally.” He added that sharing personal stories through cinema helps appreciate diverse perspectives while maintaining cultural identity, a vision Pope Francis valued deeply.

Scorsese, the acclaimed director of films such as “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Silence,” has engaged with Pope Francis on multiple occasions. Their dialogues have sometimes influenced Scorsese’s cinematic endeavors. Following a meeting with the Pope in 2023, Scorsese announced plans for a new film centered on Jesus, inspired by Sh?saku End?’s “A Life of Jesus,” though this project has not yet commenced production. Additionally, Scorsese was behind an eight-part docudrama series titled “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints” on Fox Nation last year.

Pope Francis passed away on April 21, and the process to select his successor is slated to begin on May 7.
