CLEMSON, S.C. — Clemson University has officially announced the appointment of Tom Allen as its new defensive coordinator, a decision that was confirmed on Tuesday by the Board of Trustees Compensation Committee. Allen joins the Tigers after a successful tenure at Penn State, where he demonstrated exceptional leadership on the defensive side of the ball.

With over 30 years in coaching, Allen played a pivotal role in guiding the Nittany Lions to a record-setting 13 wins this past season, culminating in a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals. He takes over the spot previously held by Wes Goodwin, who was dismissed earlier this month after the team’s defensive struggles against the rushing game became more apparent.

During his time at Penn State, Allen’s defensive unit ranked seventh in the nation in total defense, allowing only 294.8 yards per game, and eighth in scoring defense, giving up an average of just 16.5 points per game. His squad was particularly strong in creating disruptions, finishing second nationally in tackles for loss with 119 and fifth in sacks with 44.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney expressed enthusiasm about the new addition, stating, “We’ve got a great football coach — and a great leader of men — coming to Clemson. He brings a ton of experience and was highly recommended by some of the best people in this business. He is obviously coming off of a great year as the defensive coordinator at Penn State, and we’re excited to welcome him as our defensive coordinator here at Clemson.”

In his role at Penn State, Allen also served as the linebackers coach, and his defense showcased impressive performance, including returning two interceptions for touchdowns in a dominant 38-10 victory against SMU during the first round of the College Football Playoff. Furthermore, the Nittany Lions executed a solid defensive strategy, managing to limit Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty to just 3.47 yards per carry and preventing him from scoring in a 31-14 triumph during the CFP quarterfinals.

With Allen at the helm, Clemson fans can anticipate an exciting new direction for the team’s defensive strategy as they prepare for the upcoming season.
