EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Chargers made significant improvements to their offensive line with the addition of Mekhi Becton on Friday. The formidable 6-foot-7, 363-pound Becton started 19 games at right guard last season for the Philadelphia Eagles, contributing significantly to the team’s success in winning the Super Bowl. His efforts were instrumental in helping running back Saquon Barkley amass 2,504 rushing yards and score 13 touchdowns.
Becton was originally the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, having played college football at Louisville where he was recognized with first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2019. Throughout his NFL career, he has consistently performed at a high level, starting 49 of the 50 games in which he has competed, including postseason matchups.
In addition to strengthening their offensive line, the Chargers also agreed to terms with linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips. The 28-year-old has experience playing for multiple teams, including his recent stint with Houston last season on a one-year contract. Phillips has participated in 72 career NFL games, having been part of teams like the Texans, Baltimore Ravens, New York Jets, and Buffalo Bills. Despite going undrafted, Phillips demonstrated his potential during his college tenure at Illinois, where he started 21 of the 23 games he played over two seasons.
