BLACKSBURG, Va. — Virginia Tech has announced the appointment of Philip Montgomery as its new offensive coordinator. This decision was made public by the university on Monday.

Montgomery, who previously served as the head coach at Tulsa for eight seasons, concluded his tenure with a record of 43 wins and 53 losses from 2015 to 2022. During his time at Tulsa, he successfully led the team to four bowl game appearances. Among his achievements, the standout moment came in 2016 when his team finished with 10 victories and advanced to the American Athletic Conference title game in 2020. Remarkably, the 2016 season saw Montgomery’s squad become the first in Bowl Subdivision history to include a quarterback with over 3,000 passing yards, two running backs surpassing 1,000 rushing yards, and two receivers with over 1,000 receiving yards all in the same season.

In addition to his head coaching role, Montgomery brings a wealth of experience from his time as an offensive coordinator at Baylor, Auburn, and Houston. Furthermore, he was a co-coordinator for the Birmingham Stallions in the United Football League, which claimed last year’s championship.

The Hokies’ offense struggled during the previous season under Tyler Bowen, finishing in the middle tier of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Virginia Tech ranked 10th out of 17 teams, averaging 28.2 points per game, and placed 12th with an average of 367.8 yards per game.
