The Southeastern Conference has decided to delay the women’s basketball showdown between No. 5 LSU and No. 2 South Carolina, which was originally set for Thursday night in Columbia, South Carolina. The game will now take place on Friday due to the adverse winter weather conditions.
This decision was announced on Wednesday, following Winter Storm Enzo’s impact, which brought nearly a foot of snow to various areas in southern Louisiana, contributing to treacherous travel conditions in regions that are not typically equipped with snow removal resources for roads and airports.
According to the Southeastern Conference’s official notice, the rescheduled game will begin at 5 p.m. Eastern Time on Friday. Meanwhile, LSU is still planning to host Texas A&M for a home game on Sunday evening as previously arranged.
LSU spokesperson Michael Bonnette reported that roads in and around Baton Rouge remained inaccessible on Wednesday, prompting the cancellation of classes at LSU through Thursday. However, athletic officials expressed optimism that the women’s basketball team could depart Baton Rouge for South Carolina on Thursday.
After setting snowfall records in Texas and Louisiana a day earlier, the storm continued its path, unleashing heavy precipitation in the form of snow, sleet, and freezing rain over parts of the Florida Panhandle, Georgia, and the coastal Carolinas on Wednesday.
The South Carolina Gamecocks, currently with an impressive record of 18-1 and 6-0 in SEC play, recently celebrated a decisive 101-60 victory against Oklahoma on Sunday.
On the other hand, LSU boasts an undefeated record of 20-0 and has gone 5-0 in SEC matchups. They are experiencing one of the best starts in their program’s history, having recently claimed an 80-63 win at Florida on Sunday. Last season’s national championship squad holds the record for the best start with a 23-0 tally, but that team suffered its first defeat at the hands of South Carolina.
