Raiders seek to interview coordinators from Lions and Chiefs for head coach role

HENDERSON, Nev.
— The Las Vegas Raiders have moved swiftly to fill their head coaching vacancy by requesting interviews with several prominent candidates. They aim to speak with Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson, both current coordinators for the Detroit Lions, as well as Steve Spagnuolo, the defensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.

These interview requests arrive shortly after the Raiders parted ways with Antonio Pierce, who had completed one full season, leading the team to a disappointing 4-13 record. Pierce, on the other hand, had a more favorable result as the interim coach with a 5-4 record in 2023.

Aaron Glenn serves as the defensive coordinator for the Lions, while Ben Johnson fills the same role on the offensive side. Both men have garnered significant interest during this hiring period, largely due to the Lions’ strong showing, currently positioned as the top seed in the NFC playoffs.

Under Glenn’s leadership, the Lions ranked seventh in the league for scoring defense, permitting an average of just 20.1 points per game, despite facing numerous injuries throughout the season. On offense, Johnson’s strategies led the team to first place in scoring with an impressive average of 33.2 points per game.

Meanwhile, Spagnuolo has been at the helm of the Chiefs’ defense for six seasons, during which the team has captured two consecutive championships and secured the top seed in the AFC playoffs. His prior stint as head coach of the St. Louis Rams from 2009 to 2011 resulted in a challenging record of 10-38.

Under his guidance, the Chiefs have consistently ranked as one of the league’s premier defensive units, finishing fourth in scoring defense with an average of 19.2 points allowed and ninth in total defense, giving up an average of 320.6 yards per game.
