NEW YORK — Jimmy Carter stands out as the ex-president with the most extensive and varied publishing journey.

Having authored over 25 books, his works encompass genres such as nonfiction, poetry, fiction, religious reflections, and children’s literature. Notable among his publications, the memoir “An Hour Before Daylight” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2002, while “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid,” released in 2006, sparked significant debate by comparing Israel’s actions in the West Bank to the harsh apartheid regime in South Africa.

In a tribute to his impactful use of literature, the Dayton Literary Peace Prize Foundation awarded Carter a lifetime achievement honor just before he turned 100. They praised his ability to harness “the power of the written word to promote peace, social justice, and global understanding.”

Carter expressed joy in writing through his recent book, “A Full Life,” noting that his literary endeavors provided much-needed financial support. However, not every project came easily. For instance, “Everything to Gain,” co-written in 1987 with his wife, Rosalynn, presented a significant challenge in their marriage, leading to what he described as the “worst threat we ever experienced.” This was particularly surprising given his reputation as a negotiator of the Camp David accords and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Carter recounted how Rosalynn, known for her attention to detail, treated their writing with utmost seriousness, likening their sentences to commandments received from Mount Sinai. Diverging memories led to ongoing disputes between them, causing them to consider abandoning the manuscript altogether. Ultimately, an editor advised them to attribute any contentious sections to either “J” for Jimmy or “R” for Rosalynn, allowing their marriage to endure the ordeal.

Here is a selection of books authored by Carter:
