Harvey Fierstein to Receive Lifetime Tony Award

    NEW YORK—Actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein is set to add another prestigious accolade to his collection. He will be honored with a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre.

    The multifaceted four-time Tony Award-winning talent, known for his work on productions such as “Torch Song Trilogy” and “Kinky Boots,” is scheduled to receive this recognition on June 8, during a ceremony at Radio City Music Hall. This year’s telecast of the awards will be hosted by the talented Cynthia Erivo.

    “Harvey Fierstein’s contributions to the American theatre, both as an artist and activist, represent an extraordinary legacy,” noted Heather Hitchens, president & CEO of the American Theatre Wing, along with Jason Laks, president of the Broadway League, in a joint statement.

    Fierstein will now join an esteemed roster of individuals who have received this distinct honor. This includes enduring theatrical icons such as Carol Channing, Joel Gray, James Earl Jones, John Kander, Angela Lansbury, Chita Rivera, Stephen Sondheim, Tommy Tune, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and George C. Wolfe.

    Throughout his illustrious career, Fierstein has numerous distinctions to his name, including two Tony Awards for “Torch Song Trilogy,” where he was recognized for best play and best actor in a play. Additional victories include a Tony for best book of a musical with “La Cage Aux Folles” and a best actor in a musical award for his role in “Hairspray.” Beyond these achievements, his body of work extends to powerful productions like “Newsies,” “Casa Valentina,” and “A Catered Affair.”
