BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A tragic event has occurred in the Alabama A&M football community with the news of the death of a player due to injuries sustained during a recent game.
Medrick Burnett Jr., a 20-year-old linebacker, was in his first season with the university when he experienced a significant head injury while competing in the Magic City Classic against Alabama State University on October 26, as reported by the Jefferson County coroner. The official time of his passing has been confirmed as Wednesday evening.
The athletic department at Alabama A&M made an announcement about Burnett’s death on Wednesday morning, but later issued a correction on the same day. The updated statement indicated that the initial reports about his demise originated from a close family member on Tuesday evening.
Hailing from Lakewood, California, Burnett joined Alabama A&M in the summer following a brief stint at Grambling State University at the start of his collegiate career, as mentioned by the athletics department.
Attempts to reach a spokesperson from the Alabama A&M athletic department for comments on Friday morning were unsuccessful.
