A council created to restore democratic order in Haiti announced on Sunday that it has dismissed interim Prime Minister Garry Conille, appointing Alix Didier Fils-Aimé as his successor. Fils-Aimé, a businessman, had previously been considered for the role.
This decree is expected to be published on Monday and highlights the ongoing instability surrounding Haiti’s democratic processes. The nation has not conducted elections in several years, primarily due to escalating gang violence that has destabilized the region.
Formed in April, the transitional council was given the important task of selecting Haiti’s next prime minister and establishing a new Cabinet, with hopes that this would help alleviate the country’s turmoil. However, the council has been mired in political conflicts and internal disputes, and in October, several of its members faced allegations of corruption.
