UNCASVILLE, Conn. — In a remarkable performance, Angel Reese achieved her first triple-double while Hailey Van Lith showcased her skills with a career-high 16 points, leading the Chicago Sky to a decisive 78-66 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday. Reese, at 23, becomes the second-youngest player in the WNBA to secure a triple-double. The only player to achieve this feat at a younger age was Caitlin Clark, who recorded two triple-doubles before turning 23.
The Sky’s success was largely driven by Reese’s impressive tally of 11 assists, significantly surpassing her previous personal best. This allowed Chicago to have five players score in double figures. Demonstrating their depth, the Sky’s bench outclassed the reserves of the Sun, outscoring them 36-2 in the Commissioner’s Cup contest.
Reese also contributed with 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for her team (3-7). Other notable performances included Kia Nurse, who scored 11 points with a perfect 4-for-4 in field goals, including three 3-pointers. Kamilla Cardoso and Ariel Atkins each added 10 points, while Rachel Banham made her mark by sinking her 300th career 3-pointer.
For the Connecticut Sun (2-8), Marina Mabrey spearheaded the offense with 22 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Tina Charles managed to score 19 points, and Jacy Sheldon contributed 12 to the team’s efforts.
Both teams maintained a 40% shooting accuracy and each made six 3-pointers during the first half. However, Chicago capitalized on their opportunities from the free-throw line, converting all eight attempts to secure a 38-36 lead by halftime. Mabrey was the standout player with 16 points by the break.
In the second half, Connecticut regained a slight 47-44 lead, thanks to a 3-pointer from Mabrey and a couple of free throws from Charles. However, impactful plays from Michaela Onyenwere and Reese, both scoring three-point plays, shifted the momentum back to the Sky, putting them ahead 51-48. Entering the fourth quarter, Chicago maintained a 59-54 advantage.
Looking forward, Chicago will host Washington, while Connecticut is set to travel to Indiana on Tuesday.
