In a thrilling matchup, Appalachian State secured a 28-20 win over Old Dominion, driven by a standout performance from quarterback Joey Aguilar, who threw four touchdown passes, including the clutch game-winner. With just 2:29 left in the game, Aguilar connected with tight end Max Drag for an 11-yard touchdown after a meticulously executed 10-play, 32-yard drive.
As time dwindled, Old Dominion’s Colton Joseph managed to push the Monarchs to the Appalachian State 43-yard line. However, Zyeir Gamble’s timely interception with only 43 seconds remaining put an end to the Monarchs’ hopes, marking their fourth turnover of the day.
Aguilar completed 13 of his 24 passes, totaling 212 yards, showcasing his effectiveness by throwing touchdown passes in every quarter. Running back Ahmani Marshall supported the offense with a solid performance, recording 120 rushing yards on 23 carries for Appalachian State, who now holds a record of 4-4 and 2-3 within the Sun Belt Conference.
On the other side, Joseph played a significant role for Old Dominion, finishing 27-for-38 in passing attempts for 332 yards, which included two touchdown passes. Unfortunately, he also struggled with ball security, fumbling three times. Aaron Young contributed on the ground with 14 carries for 110 yards, while Isiah Page was a standout receiver, making 15 receptions for 205 yards, which featured a 28-yard touchdown catch.
This contest showcased the resilience and competitive spirit of both teams as they clashed in the heart of the season, with Appalachian State ultimately emerging victorious.
