CALGARY, Alberta — In a thrilling matchup on Tuesday night, Matt Coronato netted two goals and Dustin Wolf made an impressive 31 saves, allowing the Calgary Flames to secure a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks. This win marked the Flames’ fourth consecutive victory, bringing their record to 4-0, which ties the franchise’s best start in its history, previously achieved in the 2009-10 and 1993-94 seasons.

Andrei Kuzmenko also contributed to Calgary’s scoring, netting his first goal of the season during a power play. For the Blackhawks, Nick Foligno managed to score, but the team concluded its season-opening four-game road trip with a disappointing record of 1-2-1. In goal for Chicago, Petr Mrazek recorded 23 saves.

Coronato sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, just 39 seconds before the final buzzer. It was a game filled with opportunities for the Blackhawks, especially as they outshot the Flames 7-1 in the early minutes of the second period while the score was knotted at 1-1. However, Wolf’s remarkable performance kept the score level, including a crucial save against Joey Anderson during a short-handed breakaway and a remarkable pad stop on Teuvo Teravainen’s one-timer.

The Flames’ fourth line proved to be an unexpected source of offense yet again. Justin Kirkland, stepping in for Kevin Rooney, scored his first NHL goal on Saturday and assisted on Coronato’s opening goal in this game. Ryan Lomberg provided support on the left side of the line.

A pivotal moment in the match occurred when Connor Bedard was sent to the penalty box for slashing, giving the Flames an opportunity. With an impending delayed penalty against Foligno, Kuzmenko skillfully redirected a shot from Jonathan Huberdeau, allowing Calgary to take the lead at that critical juncture of the game.

In terms of individual achievements, Connor Zary recorded an assist on Kuzmenko’s goal, bringing his season total to five points (two goals, three assists). He remains the only Calgary player to register points in every game this season. Rasmus Andersson also provided an assist, increasing his total to six points (two goals, four assists), leading all defensemen in the NHL.

Looking ahead, the Blackhawks are set to host the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night, while the Flames will travel to face the Seattle Kraken on Saturday.
