Cartons of frozen nutritional shakes intended for nursing homes and other facilities are undergoing a recall due to a listeria outbreak associated with these items.
The affected shakes are marketed under the brands Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial, and have been distributed to institutional customers such as hospitals and long-term care establishments, as informed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday.
According to reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeria cases linked to these products have been traced back to 2018, yet investigators had struggled to pinpoint the origin of the contamination until now. A total of 38 individuals have reportedly contracted listeria, with 11 fatalities resulting from the infections. The investigation led by the FDA is currently ongoing.
