Potential Breakout NFL Players in Their Second Year: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Will McDonald, and Luke Musgrave

Some football players like C.J. Stroud and Puka Nacua are able to shine in the NFL right from their rookie season. However, for most rookies, the transition to the professional level takes time, and a challenging first year doesn’t necessarily mean a player is destined to fail in the league. Various players from the previous draft class didn’t stand out as rookies but are now poised to make significant progress in their second year.

One potential breakout candidate for the 2024 season is offensive lineman Peter Skoronski from the Tennessee Titans. Skoronski, the 11th overall pick in the 2023 draft, had a tough rookie season after switching positions from college tackle to professional guard. A health issue early in the season affected his performance, but now fully recovered and settled as the left guard, he is expected to benefit from coaching and new teammates to show improvement.

Defensive end Will McDonald of the New York Jets is another player to watch. Despite limited playing time in his rookie year after being drafted 15th overall, McDonald showed promise with 12 pressures and three sacks in only 184 defensive snaps. With changes in the team’s defensive lineup, McDonald is showing promise and is likely to see more playing time this season.

Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba of the Seattle Seahawks, while having a decent rookie season, is expected to step up in his second year. Injuries hindered his progress in the offseason, but he fits well in the team’s new offensive scheme and could emerge as a top receiver for the Seahawks.

Tight end Luke Musgrave of the Green Bay Packers has shown glimpses of potential, including scoring a touchdown in a playoff game. Despite missing games due to injury, Musgrave is in a good position to contribute more this season with the Packers having a young group of pass catchers.

Wide receiver Jonathan Mingo of the Carolina Panthers is looking to bounce back from a challenging rookie season. With improvements in the team’s offensive scheme and the addition of new playmakers, Mingo should have more opportunities to showcase his skills.

Running back Chase Brown of the Cincinnati Bengals is anticipated to have a more significant role in the team’s offense after the departure of Joe Mixon. Brown, a fifth-round pick, is expected to showcase his versatility as a strong receiving threat as well as a runner during the upcoming season.
