SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Hockey Club has extended the contracts of forward Alexander Kerfoot and defenseman Ian Cole, securing both players for another year with $3 million deals each, announced on Wednesday. These extensions follow closely on the heels of Finnish defenseman Olli Maatta’s recent three-year contract extension, signed just days earlier.
Kerfoot, a 30-year-old former Harvard player, boasts an impressive record this season with seven goals and nine assists over 61 games. Over his entire NHL career, he has accumulated 94 goals and 186 assists through 585 games, representing teams such as Colorado, Toronto, Arizona, and now, Utah. Kerfoot, known as one of the team’s rotating alternate captains, also maintains a remarkable record of durability, having played 406 consecutive games since November 30, 2019. This achievement ranks as the fourth-longest active ironman streak currently in the NHL.
On the defense, Ian Cole brings significant experience to the team, with a career spanning 887 NHL games. This season, the 36-year-old has contributed one goal and 12 assists in his 61 appearances. A former Notre Dame player, Cole has been part of numerous teams, including St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Colorado, Minnesota, Carolina, Tampa Bay, Vancouver, and now, Utah. His postseason contributions are notable, with 129 playoff games under his belt, and having been instrumental in helping the Pittsburgh Penguins clinch championships in 2016 and 2017.
