Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals have collaborated with Hockey Fights Cancer and the V Foundation to launch a new initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for pediatric cancer research. This initiative is linked to Ovechkin’s pursuit of breaking the NHL’s career goal-scoring record.
Currently, Ovechkin is just 10 goals away from matching and 11 from surpassing Wayne Gretzky’s formidable record of 894 career goals, a milestone that many once thought unreachable. In a recent statement, Ovechkin expressed his pride in supporting the V Foundation’s critical research efforts. The initiative, titled The GR8 Chase for Victory Over Cancer, reflects his dedication.
“During my NHL journey, I’ve encountered many courageous children battling cancer. It’s vital for me to contribute to saving as many lives as possible from this disease,” Ovechkin remarked. He extended his gratitude to the V Foundation for their diligent work and is eager to utilize his position to advance the mission of both the V Foundation and Hockey Fights Cancer.
A notable feature of this initiative includes Ovechkin pledging to donate an amount equivalent to his career total goals each time he scores from now on. Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the ownership group of the Capitals, will double this donation. This pledge starts as Ovechkin takes the ice against the New York Rangers. This doubled contribution could amount to $19,580 when he reaches the 895-goal milestone, continuing as long as he remains active on the ice.
Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation for Cancer Research, stated, “Alex Ovechkin’s phenomenal journey to greatness on the ice thrills all hockey enthusiasts, and his commitment to sponsoring pioneering pediatric cancer research will leave a lasting impact on many lives.” Established in 1993 by the late Jim Valvano, a renowned N.C. State basketball coach, alongside ESPN, the V Foundation warmly welcomes Ovechkin to their cause.
In addition to these contributions, both Ovechkin and the Capitals encourage fans to donate $8, representing Ovechkin’s jersey number, or a gift of any size in tribute to his record-chasing journey. With Ovechkin having scored 31 goals this season, he is poised to break the record by early April. His pace may have been faster had he not missed 16 games in the fall due to a leg injury.
