Infielder Jose Iglesias has reached an agreement on a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres, as disclosed by a source familiar with the situation. Although the deal hasn’t been made public, the source shared this information under the condition of anonymity. Should Iglesias secure a spot on the Padres’ 40-man roster, he would earn a salary of $3 million at the major league level, with the potential to gain an additional $1 million through performance bonuses.

Last season, Iglesias made a significant impact with the New York Mets, aiding their journey to the playoffs. Over the course of 118 games, he posted a batting average of .337, accompanied by four home runs and 26 runs batted in. Initially starting his 2023 season without a major league appearance, he later joined the Mets in late May following a minor league contract.

In addition to his significant on-field contributions, Iglesias is noted for his involvement in the Mets’ postseason ambiance through his song “OMG.” This predominantly Spanish-language track became synonymous with the Mets’ unexpected playoff surge. During key moments, both players and fans would raise “OMG” signs in blue and orange, celebrating the excitement, and one such sign was even donated to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Throughout his MLB career that began in 2011, Iglesias has maintained a batting average of .283 over 1,181 games, playing for a variety of teams, including Boston, Detroit, Cincinnati, Baltimore, the Los Angeles Angels, Colorado, and the Mets. Notably, he was the runner-up for the AL Rookie of the Year award in 2013, with Tampa Bay’s Wil Myers taking the top spot, and an All-Star for the Tigers in 2015.
