Polyfamily on TLC: New Show Takes Polyamory to the Next Level (Photo: TLC)
TLC is set to launch a new reality show called Polyfamily. The show follows two married couples who are in a closed quad relationship. This means they are not just married to their original spouses but also dating each other’s partners. While TLC is known for its controversial reality shows, this one has sparked intense reactions from viewers. Many people find the concept disturbing and inappropriate, leading to heated discussions online about Polyfamily.
TLC, originally known as The Learning Channel, has faced backlash for pushing boundaries with its content. Many viewers believe the network has gone too far this time. Some took to social media to express their disgust regarding Polyfamily. One person even went as far as calling TLC ‘the Antichrist.’ Others did not hold back either. One viewer stated, ‘This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.’ Another added, ‘No. Y’all are getting grosser and grosser.’
Some people hope the younger generation will reject these ideas. One person commented, ‘Gen Z needs to stop this nonsense. Gen X and millennials took it too far.’ Another added, ‘Read the room. We’re over this crap.’ The reactions show that many believe reality TV has reached a new low with this concept introduced in Polyfamily.
The new series, set to premiere in April, follows Sean and Taya and Tyler and Alysia. Both couples are legally married, but they have chosen to form a closed polyamorous quad. This means they only date within their group and do not have any outside partners. Sean described their relationship by saying, ‘Taya is my wife, and Alysia is my girlfriend.’ Tyler added, ‘And vice versa. Alysia is my wife, and Taya is my girlfriend.’ This unique dynamic is the focus of Polyfamily.
Sean and Taya have been married for six years, while Alysia and Tyler have been together for eleven years. The couples claim they did not originally plan this kind of life but realized they could love more than one person. They say they have created their own rules for what their family looks like. However, the relationship structure raises many questions, especially regarding parenting in the Polyfamily.
One of the biggest challenges the couples face is parenting. Alysia and Tyler had two children before joining the quad. Since then, the couples have welcomed two more sons, and another baby is on the way. But there is a major issue—no one knows exactly who fathered the younger children. Taya, who is currently pregnant, admitted, ‘Since the guys switch rooms every night, we don’t know who the fathers of the younger boys are.’
Tyler acknowledged that this uncertainty can be difficult. He said, ‘We wonder sometimes, but finding out could cause a lot of hurt.’ This aspect of their relationship has drawn even more criticism. Many people feel that their lifestyle creates an unstable family environment. The dynamics within Polyfamily are raising concerns. Some believe the children will struggle with identity issues as they grow up. Others argue that this is not a healthy way to raise a family.
Despite the backlash, some viewers are intrigued by the show. While many have criticized TLC, others are willing to give the series a chance. One person said, ‘I’m gonna check it out, but they should have cast better-looking people.’ Another added, ‘Count me in! I already have a bunch of opinions about the Polyfamily.’
Still, others questioned TLC’s direction. One viewer asked, ‘Isn’t this supposed to be The Learning Channel? What are they teaching? That monogamy is not normal?’ Another person joked about the trend of non-traditional relationship shows. They wrote, ‘With all these throuples, Seeking Sister Wife, and Brother Husbands shows, how can I get a show about my 12-year monogamous marriage?’
Life in the quad is not as perfect as it may seem. Sean and Tyler admitted they do not always get along. Sean explained, ‘We live together, share partners, and parent together. But if we weren’t in this situation, we probably wouldn’t be friends.’ Their tense dynamic adds another layer of drama to Polyfamily.
The women also struggle with their emotions. Alysia confessed that she sometimes feels jealous of Taya and Tyler’s bond. She said, ‘It almost looks like they’re more in love than me and him.’ Even in a polyamorous relationship like Polyfamily, jealousy is still an issue. This shows that emotions can get complicated, even in unconventional relationships.
As if things weren’t already complicated enough, Taya dropped a major bombshell at the end of the trailer. She announced, ‘I have something to share. I feel like I have a connection with someone else.’ This revelation shocked the group and added tension to the Polyfamily.
Tyler immediately responded, ‘That complicates things.’ The whole premise of their relationship was that it was a closed quad. If Taya brings in someone new, the entire foundation of their dynamic could fall apart. Alysia seemed uncertain about what this meant for their future. She admitted, ‘I don’t know where we go from here.’
The drama is just beginning. Polyfamily premieres in April, and viewers will soon find out how this unconventional relationship plays out. With tension, jealousy, and unexpected twists, the show promises plenty of drama for reality TV fans.
