SANTA CLARA, Calif. — In a move to revamp their special teams unit, the San Francisco 49ers released long snapper Taybor Pepper after a five-year tenure and signed Jon Weeks, a free agent previously with the Houston Texans.
Pepper, who first took on the long snapping duties in 2020, exhibited consistency by sitting out just one game, courtesy of COVID-19 protocols during the final game of that season.
This transition is part of a larger overhaul by the 49ers, spearheaded by the recent hiring of special teams coordinator Brant Boyer, following the dismissal of former coordinator Brian Schneider. The team has been proactively seeking talent for its special teams in the early stages of free agency, making this change in the long snapping position.
Jon Weeks, aged 39, brings a wealth of experience with him, having spent the last 15 seasons with the Houston Texans. Throughout his career in Houston, Weeks maintained an impressive record by participating in all 244 regular-season games, as well as 14 playoff matchups. His performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection post the 2015 season.
