Alabama St. defeats Texas So. 84-79; Bass shines with 16 points

    COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — With a solid performance off the bench, D’ante Bass propelled Alabama State to a thrilling 84-79 victory over Texas Southern in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday. Bass was instrumental, contributing 16 points and grabbing eight rebounds for the Hornets, which improved their season record to 17-15.

    In addition to Bass’s standout game, Antonio Madlock showcased his versatility by scoring 15 points, securing eight rebounds, and handing out six assists. Not to be overshadowed, CJ Hines delivered an impressive shooting display, going 6 for 10 from the field and 3 for 4 from three-point range, culminating in a 15-point performance.

    On the other side, Texas Southern, who have a 15-17 record, found key contributions from Zaire Hayes. Hayes was the leading scorer for the Tigers with 24 points and seven rebounds. His teammate, Kavion McClain, also made his presence felt with 15 points, six assists, and two steals. Adding to the Tigers’ effort, Jaylen Wysinger chipped in with 14 points and three steals.

    During the first half, Hines scored 13 points, helping Alabama State gain a comfortable 41-29 lead at the break. In the second half, Bass’s 15-point effort ensured that Alabama State maintained their momentum and sealed the hard-fought win.

    The Hornets’ balanced attack and ability to keep their composure under pressure were crucial in advancing past Texas Southern in the tournament.
