FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have kicked off the free agency period by strengthening their offensive lineup, securing one-year agreements with Javonte Williams, a running back coming from Denver, and Rob Jones, an offensive lineman from Miami.

The Cowboys made strides in reinforcing their running game by adding Williams, while also ensuring continuity in their squad with the re-signing of defensive back Markquese Bell and long snapper Trent Sieg. According to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, Jones has signed a contract potentially worth up to $4.5 million.

Williams, who was drafted in the second round in 2021, boasts an impressive record with 2,394 yards and 11 touchdowns over four seasons with the Broncos. His arrival casts uncertainty over the future of Rico Dowdle, who made history as the first undrafted running back for the Cowboys to achieve a 1,000-yard rushing season.

Despite a promising second half of the season from Dowdle, the Cowboys ranked low in rushing offense, finishing 27th in the NFL. New head coach Brian Shottenheimer has emphasized the importance of enhancing the team’s running game following the departure of Mike McCarthy.

Looking ahead, the Cowboys are likely to leverage a talent-rich draft class at the running back position to further bolster their offense, possessing the 12th overall pick in the upcoming draft.

In terms of offensive line competition, Jones might vie for the starting spot at right guard, a position currently taken by Brock Hoffman following Zack Martin’s significant ankle injury last season. Martin, a seven-time All-Pro, recently announced his retirement.

Markquese Bell, identified as a safety, brings versatility to the defensive lineup and may adapt to play closer to the line of scrimmage, filling the void after nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis’s move to Jacksonville in free agency.

With long snapper Trent Sieg’s return, the Cowboys find stability in their special teams, particularly for kicker Brandon Aubrey, a two-time Pro Bowler. Meanwhile, punter Bryan Anger, who served as Aubrey’s holder, remains a free agent.
