INDIANAPOLIS — In an electrifying finish to the semifinal of the Horizon League Tournament, Youngstown State’s Siem Uijtendaal made a significant impact by scoring all 13 of his points in the second half. Ty Harper contributed a crucial four-point play with just 44 seconds left on the clock, despite having missed his initial nine shots. This last-minute rally propelled Youngstown State to secure a narrow 56-54 triumph over Cleveland State.
The Penguins, who are the fourth seed with a record of 21-12, move forward to take on the top-seeded Robert Morris in the championship match on Tuesday. A victory in this game would grant them an automatic spot in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Earlier in the night, Robert Morris edged past sixth-seeded Oakland, clinching a 79-76 win in an overtime thriller.
Despite struggling initially, Harper managed to deliver when it counted, hitting his decisive three-pointer for the win after missing all six previous attempts from beyond the arc. Tevin Smith had positioned Cleveland State, the second seed, to lead by two following his successful free throws with 1:08 remaining.
Uijtendaal also proved instrumental defensively with four steals for Youngstown State. Nico Galette contributed nine points, 12 rebounds, and three steals. Harper concluded the game with nine points.
On the other side, Smith led Cleveland State with 14 points and two blocks. Teammates Je’Shawn Stevenson and Tahj Staveskie added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Juwan Maxey provided an early boost for Youngstown State, scoring all eight of his points in the first half, which concluded with the Penguins narrowly leading 22-21.
This pivotal win positions Youngstown State for a shot at the Horizon League crown and a coveted NCAA berth, hinging on their performance against the formidable Robert Morris.
