FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys have made a significant move in their strategy by enhancing their run game with the acquisition of new talent through the free agency period. The team has secured one-year agreements with Javonte Williams, a former running back from the Denver Broncos, and Rob Jones, an offensive lineman previously with the Miami Dolphins.

Williams, previously a second-round draft pick in 2021, brings his impressive record from Denver, where he accumulated 2,394 rushing yards and scored 11 touchdowns over four seasons. His addition to the Cowboys’ roster casts uncertainty on the future of Rico Dowdle, who made a notable impact as the first undrafted player from Dallas to achieve over 1,000 rushing yards. Despite Dowdle’s solid performance in the latter half of the season, the Cowboys ranked 27th in rushing offense last season. With the leadership of new head coach Brian Shottenheimer, succeeding Mike McCarthy, there is a renewed emphasis on revitalizing the team’s rushing attack.

The Cowboys are likely to capitalize on the upcoming deep running back draft, holding the 12th overall pick, to further fortify their roster. In addition to Williams, the team has reenlisted its own free agents, namely defensive back Markquese Bell and long snapper Trent Sieg. The deal for Rob Jones, valued up to $4.5 million according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, brings a competitive edge to the right guard position, alongside Brock Hoffman. Hoffman took over after seven-time All-Pro Zack Martin’s season-ending ankle injury, followed by Martin’s recent retirement.

Markquese Bell, primarily a safety, offers flexibility that could prove valuable on the line of scrimmage, considering the Cowboys’ need after losing nickel cornerback Jourdan Lewis to Jacksonville during free agency. In another strategic move, bringing back Sieg ensures a reliable partnership with kicker Brandon Aubrey, who has achieved Pro Bowl recognition for two consecutive seasons. The Cowboys still face decisions in finalizing their special teams lineup, with punter Bryan Anger, Aubrey’s holder, now among the free agent pool.
