BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — With a decisive triumph over Western Kentucky, Liberty secured the Conference USA regular-season championship on Saturday, with Jay Maughmer and Taelon Peter each scoring 21 points in the 90-61 victory.
Maughmer showcased his all-around game by also contributing 15 rebounds and six assists, bolstering the Flames’ performance (25-6, 13-5 Conference USA). Peter was a force on the boards as well, contributing nine rebounds. Brett Decker Jr. delivered a standout performance, shooting accurately with 5-of-8 from the field, including 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, and remained perfect at the free-throw line, contributing 16 points overall.
On the other side of the scoreboard, Khristian Lander spearheaded the Hilltoppers’ effort with 18 points and two steals, despite Western Kentucky’s falling to a record of 17-14 and 8-10 within the conference. Don McHenry also added 14 points for the team, and Jalen Jackson chipped in with eight points.
The excitement for college basketball continues as the Conference USA tournament is set to begin on Wednesday in Huntsville, Alabama.
