Old Dominion defeats Texas State in Sun Belt Tournament

    PENSACOLA, Fla. — In a thrilling finish at the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, Robert Davis Jr. secured Old Dominion’s victory with a decisive 3-pointer as just three seconds were left on the clock. Davis accumulated a total of 23 points, leading the 10th-seeded Monarchs to a 64-61 win over the seventh-seeded Texas State. This victory allows Old Dominion to progress to the fourth round, where they will meet the No. 6 seed, Appalachian State.

    Davis demonstrated remarkable accuracy, shooting 6 of 14 from the field, with an impressive 6 for 13 from beyond the arc, and a near-perfect 5 for 6 from the free-throw line. Sean Durugordon contributed significantly as well, scoring 19 points on 7 of 15 shooting, including 2 for 4 from three-point range, also collecting 12 rebounds. R.J. Blakney added nine points, making 4 of 10 from the field with one successful free throw out of three attempts. This win ended a six-game losing streak for the Monarchs, improving their record to 14-19.

    On the Texas State side, Tylan Pope led the offense with 15 points and secured six rebounds. Josh O’Garro also made his presence felt with a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Kaden Gumbs rounded out their top performers with 10 points. Despite their efforts, the Bobcats concluded their tournament journey with a 16-16 record.

    Davis’s performance was particularly noteworthy in the second half, where he managed to score 17 points, culminating in the game-winning shot that sealed the Monarchs’ victory.
