WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, a federal judge extended a nationwide injunction against President Donald Trump’s executive orders that seek to stop federal funding for gender-affirming health care for transgender individuals under the age of 19.
The recent decision followed a lawsuit filed earlier this month by families with transgender or nonbinary children, who argued that these executive orders have already disrupted and compromised their health care services.
Joining the lawsuit are a national organization representing families of LGBTQ+ individuals and a medical association, both challenging several executive orders by Trump aimed at reversing the policies established by former President Joe Biden.
The U.S. District Judge Brendan Hurson in Baltimore, who was nominated by Biden, issued a preliminary injunction, halting the implementation of these orders while the legal proceedings continue. The administration, however, is anticipated to submit an appeal.
Following Trump’s orders, several hospitals across the United States paused providing these health care services to minors, fearing the withdrawal of federal funding.
In a related case, a judge in Seattle also blocked the orders in four specific states as a result of a separate lawsuit initiated by a coalition of Democratic-led states.
