In Los Angeles, the disciplinary committee of CONCACAF has exonerated Los Angeles FC defender Sergi Palencia of any discriminatory conduct arising from an on-field spat last month with Chidozie Awaziem, a defender for the Colorado Rapids. The incident took place on February 25 during the second leg of their teams’ CONCACAF Champions Cup Round 1 encounter.

Following the altercation, Colorado Rapids’ coach, Chris Armas, mentioned that Awaziem was visibly distressed, alleging that a derogatory term had been directed at him. The match was temporarily paused at the start of extra time because of the argument. Awaziem, who plays for the Nigerian national team and joined Major League Soccer last season with Cincinnati, reiterated on social media that he believed he had been subjected to abusive language on the field. The Rapids expressed support for Awaziem through a statement condemning discriminatory language.

However, after conducting an investigation, CONCACAF found no evidence supporting Awaziem’s allegations against Palencia, a Spanish veteran currently in his third season with LAFC. The disciplinary committee stated that it had conducted a comprehensive review that included examining match officials’ reports, available footage, audio recordings, and the respective stances of both clubs.

In a statement detailing the outcomes of their investigation, the disciplinary committee asserted, “While the evidence confirms that the interaction between Palencia and Colorado Rapids player Chidozie Awaziem involved inappropriate language, it is clear to the Committee that the word reported by the Colorado Rapids in its official position to CONCACAF was not used.” The committee emphasized the need for all parties involved—teams, players, and fans—to engage in sport positively and respectfully, underscoring that there is no place for discrimination in soccer.

Los Angeles FC triumphed over Colorado with a 1-0 victory in the second-leg clash and is set to host the Columbus Crew in the first leg of their round-of-16 series on Tuesday night.
